So, here’s a hard truth: About 10 years ago, I had a pretty active blog. I wrote daily posts, guest posts, and sponsored posts. I learned buckets about SEO, WordPress, and graphic design.
And then, one day, I deleted it. Just… completely erased it in a moment of impulsive I-give-up-ness.
I still can’t believe it. My ego completely got in the way of keeping my hard work. Because I thought it was junk. It was all “bad”.
All those words, and all that potential, wiped away. Forever. Can you imagine all the material I’d have now?
If nothing else, I could have used it to poke fun at how I used to write. I could have used it as ideas for my writing now. Or used it as motivation when I forget how far I’ve come.
But I didn’t know then what I know now. I didn’t see the long game.
Start now. Don’t quit. Take a break if you need to! But. Don’t. Quit. Or at least backup your blog. (Google Drive wasn’t a thing back then).
Just… keep your hands off that delete button.
Why Blogging Is Important for Business
If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of starting a blog, I’m here to tell you to do it. Even if it’s messy. Even if you don’t have all the pieces figured out yet. Here’s why:
- Content is Digital Real Estate – Your blog is a living portfolio. It’s a record of your experience and expertise as a business or a creative. It’s the online version of planting a tree.
The sooner you start, the sooner you can start to see it grow. - Build Your Brand – How do you build a brand? Let’s start with the fact that a blog is actually a powerful branding tool.
If you think you’ll ever start freelance writing in any capacity, it’s a great way to show longevity, experience, and a willingness to improve.
- SEO Takes Time – Think about it. The more content you produce, the more opportunities you have to hit the SEO jackpot.
As you write, you’ll learn from experience what great SEO looks like. It gives you the chance to experiment and have real experiences you can share with future clients or employers, if you’re interested in writing or marketing professionally. - It’s a Creative Playground – Your blog is a low-pressure corner of the internet where you can practice different techniques, different lengths of articles, and even write in different niches until you find the ones that fit your style and feel good to you.
- Blogs Can Be Profitable – Whether it’s affiliate links, sponsored posts, or digital products, a blog can become a passive income stream. This was definitely more do-able 10 years ago when I started my first blog, but still is an option.
don’t make My mistake
If you do start a blog, don’t make the same mistake I did. Keep your content. Even the cringey, early posts. At least save it in a folder somewhere, tucked away. You never know when they might become something you can recycle, or even use as a story of your growth as a writer and creator.
So, if you have an idea, a passion, or just a story to share, go ahead and hit ‘publish.’ You just might thank yourself later.
I can’t be the only one who ran a blog back in the day. What was your blogging experience like? Do you still have any of your old articles or posts?
